Cheryl Silva

The Durham Lords women’s volleyball team captured the central east division title again after a win in their season conference finale at Georgian College. This marks their second straight division title, and their fifth in the last six years. A big part of the teams success has been the play of Cheryl Silva who had a solid week and on Feb. 12 win over the Loyalist Lancers had 13 points (11 kills, 1 block, 1 serving ace).

In addition, the Lords will receive a bye into the OCAA Championships that will take place February 22nd to 24th in Barrie. This will mark the 16th straight year they have qualified for a play off spot and the sixth straight year in which they’ve qualified for the OCAA Championships.

The Lords have been dominant in conference play this year, finishing with a 13-2 record. They will walk into Barrie with their heads up high and aim to walk out with their first OCAA Gold medal since 2002.

Anthony Batchelor (Third time)

On Feb. 9 The third year forward from Seattle, Washington scored an amazing 58 points in the game, shattering the Durham College single game scoring record of 43 set by Dudley Bent in 2002.

Bitter sweet is the record for Batchelor and the Lords as it came in an extremely tough one point loss during the play-off push. However, the scoring feat is amazing nonetheless. According to head Coach Peter Gordon “He could have scored more (which is scary) but because he is an unselfish player he actually passed up a couple of shots. I was really impressed how he scored his 58 points; he did it from behind the arc, on transition, and was unbelievable from the line. It was a very impressive performance.” That rationale coming from the fact that Batchelor who posted 27 points in the first half failed to hit the score sheet for the first seven and a half minutes. In the second half, he poured in 31 more points in the final 12 and a half minutes of the game for a record shattering total of 58. Even though Batchelor knew he broke the record it was still very upsetting to him with the loss.

Scoring line for Batchelor:
2FG 14 for 21.... 3FG 2 for 5.... Overall FG 16 for 26 Free throws made 24 of 27.
Other stats.....40 minutes played.....6 Rebounds and 1 Assist.

Crabbe led the offensive attack with a season high 23 points (21 kills, and 2 aces). Thanks to Crabbe the men are currently ranked third in the province and improve their conference record to 8-3, only 2 points out of first place in the central east region. Congratulations Dave for being this week’s athlete of the week
